Any kind of writing, be it fiction or news writing, it is best done with the use of quotes. Big chunks of narrative in any story can make it boring. It is like listening to the same speaker going on for a very long time. It is therefore always a good idea to break it up by letting someone else do the talking for some time. This can be achieved by using quotes in the text.
It is easiest to add quotes to news or feature writing. Once a number of sources have been interviewed, all one needs to do is pick the right quotes which can best tell the story. As one gets more experienced with news writing, they will learn to weave quotes into their story or make them the foundation to build the story on. If that cannot be done easily, then the basic rule is to place a relevant quote after every few paragraphs. The biggest advantage in adding quotes to non-fiction stories is that it lends authority to the writing and especially if the sources are credible experts in the field. Also, adding quotes in non-fiction writing adds a special human touch to writing which can become too much of facts and figures if the writer is not careful.
Adding quotes to fictional writing is slightly more difficult that non fictional. This is not because it is difficult to think of something for the characters to say. It is because it is a challenge to make sure that the quotes do not sound like they are in the writer’s own voice. This could make all the characters sound the same and is not advisable. The characters should not be too overdone either as this makes the write up quite funny. One needs to achieve the right balance to be able to make the work look impressive with quotes.
